Oatmeal Stout (All Grain Experiment 2)

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

After the success of the last all-grain stout, we decided to try an oatmeal version.

We cooked oats in minimum amount of water as recommended by a book. Turned clumpy – probably kept it from adding much to the mash. In turn, the OG was low (1.042). Added 1lb natural cane sugar at end to up it to 1.050 This *should* give us a ABV above 5%

    Just a quick note:

This beer kicked butt! It is by far, one of the best produced by us. Full bodied and very fulfilling.

Next batch should correct the oat problems and low OG. Might also add some other grains like Amaranth for even more complexity. It would also be a prime candidate for some cold-brewed espresso: http://www.hopworksbeer.com/survival_stout.php
