MAKE Volume 33
Tuesday, January 29th, 2013
MAKE is an awesome magazine published quarterly by O’Reilly. Each issue focuses on DIY culture and contains dozens of projects that you are encouraged to build yourself. I have been a fan since Volume 3, when they featured plans for a potato cannon.
So, when Mark Frauenfelder spotted this humble blog post and asked if I would write an article … I immediately said yes!
Growing the Ghost
The article was published in the 33rd volume of Make, which hit the shelves January 2013.
It outlines the basic process of growing the peppers from seed, moving them to the garden and harvesting ripe chilies. I tried to include as many tips as possible. There is even a recipe for my favorite Belize style hot sauce.
Please pick up a copy and let me know what you think.

One more thing…
The Bhut Jolokia is not only spicy, it is also quite beautiful.
For your enjoyment: here is a high-resolution scan of a pair of chilies. Like all the images I post on the site, this is licensed CC – so please feel free to download, print and share.

Great article in Make on growing the “Ghost”. Getting ready to order some seeds so that I may grow some of my own here in Peoria AZ. Any tips for the desert environment?

Chad,
Thank you.
Looks like Peoria is zoned USDA 9 – plenty of sun to grow these chilies. Just be sure to give them rich soil and adequate water. In the heat of summer, mulch will slow the loss of moisture from the soil. You can also use some shade cloth if the leaves start to burn.
Cheers.
