Bicycle Awareness Bicycle Awareness

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I try to ride my bike whenever possible. Over the years, it has become obvious that drivers are trained to see other cars. I have narrowly avoided several accidents where drivers later claimed that they “did not see me”. When this happened to me on bicycle – I thought that it might my relative size […]

Skiing Skiing

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

For over 15 years in Portland, I have stared up at Mt. Hood. Each winter, it becomes covered in a fresh blanket of white snow. I have gone hiking, snow camping and even snowshoeing. But, until this year – the most traditional of snow sports (skiing) had eluded me. This was my third time and […]

iPhone SDK iPhone SDK

Today, apple released the beta SDK for building your own iphone apps. During the announcement, there were some good points and some bad points. The good: iPhone Getting Multitouch Games Including Spore Apple to Allow VoIP Over WiFi AIM Client for iPhone SDK access to camera and other items could make for some fun apps […]

Paddling Upstream Paddling Upstream

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

A big weekend. On Saturday, we went urban-lumberjacking again. On Monday, Fish flew out to his new home in Land-o’-lakes Florida. Between those two, I found some time to do a little paddling. Jamie and I went to the Elk Rock Island dock that is about 5 minutes south of my house. When you launch […]

To quote the disgruntled Mr Fish: “They said it could not be done, but 3 bottles of gin and 15 packs of marlbros later i overcame the dark side!! Will miss the game and all the coaching. Thanks to 2 iPhones and 3 grown adults, we beat an 18 year old game!!! Damn I had […]

Shrinksafe is back! Shrinksafe is back!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

The dudes at dojo developed a great tool called shrinksafe that can safely optimize your JavaScript. It removes the whitespace and shortens local variable names, but leaves the function names alone. They offer a downloadable installation – but when you live on the web, who has time to install apps? Until recently, they also hosted […]

“Some” photos of my parents dogs. They are both mutts rescued by the Oregon humane society. Mabel Has the lighter brown, tiger-striped coat. She is either a Plott hound, or Black Mouth Cur mix. Indigo (Indy) Is much larger and has grey/black spots. She is most likely a Catahoula mix.

Farewell Netscape Farewell Netscape

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Today marks the end of an era. Netscape Communicator was the first graphical web browser that I ever used. Mosaic may have come first, but for me and countless others, Netscape was our introduction to the “true” web. I still remember the day that I loaded the 3.5″ floppy(s?) into the old Macintosh Quadra. Goodbye […]

Strange spam... Strange spam…

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Spam just seems to keep getting stranger… I don’t approve of the practice, but from a monetary point of view, I understand how effective spamming can be for certian products. Take meds for instance. There must be a ton of people who are too embarrassed, or can’t afford/get a prescription/ect. for Viagra. Generally it seems […]

To catch a dinosaur To catch a dinosaur

Monday, February 25th, 2008

This weekend we went out fishing – for sturgeon. These prehistoric looking fish can live for hundreds of years growing up to 18 feet long. In Oregon, you use barb-less hooks and can only keep fish of a certain size – between 4 and 5 feet! While we didn’t nab any keepers, the four that […]
